What Our Clients Say

Real results from people who refused to let recurring pain and poor recovery slow them down.

I originally came to Ryan for a squat lean issue. I had developed a lean from low-bar squatting that translated to back pain and knee pain. We've made huge strides in tackling my imbalances and pain which has led me to squat & deadlift new PRs. I can also walk pain free now (no knee irritation). Ryan designs my training cycles to consider my powerlifting goals as well as exercises that work towards strengthening other areas. Ryan is easy to work with and communicate with. He is very talented in diagnosis while understanding the big picture. The warm-ups, stretches, and drills that he assigns are all practical and the feedback is immediate.
Will Cauthen
I saw Ryan about a hip issue I had been having for 4 years and have to say I was very impressed with the success I have had. I had difficulty with engaging in my sport and keeping fit. Ryan took the time to listen to my story and evaluated my hip to come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan. He was able to explain where my pain was coming from and how I could get rid of it. After we finished treatment, Ryan built me an exercise program to ensure I recovered completely. He was fantastic from start to finish and I couldn't recommend him highly enough
David Flanagan
I have worked with Ryan for over a year now. In my teens I had hip surgery and ACL reconstructive surgery. Over the last 10 years, I have constantly battled swelling, aching, and overall discomfort. Since having Ryan do my programming, I have seen tremendous progress in my overall struggles with previous injuries. He really takes the time to know the injury and can provide realistic rehabilitation that works! I have recommended him to several family members and friends. His knowledge makes him the perfect person to provide the support for injuries while also training in strength performance sports.
Alexis Newman
I recently tore my ACL and went to Ryan for my rehabilitation. His knowledge about the injury and plan he set for me is the reason I am back doing the things I love. I am able to run, play tennis, and golf without pain. He provided a level of care I have not experienced at your typical physical therapy clinic. Once I was back to activities, he provided me with a program to reduce the risk of it ever happening again.
Revolution Rehab
Ryan is extremely knowledgeable and professional, and I am beyond happy I have worked with him. As someone who works a very active job and lifts weights, I was happy to get feedback on the pain I was experiencing from someone who understands my lifestyle and sport. I 100% recommend seeking his physical therapy service if you ever are experiencing any pain or injuries, or just want to move better!
Hannah Bennett
I can't speak of Ryan highly enough. I had a pretty bad injury in 2020 to my hip/glute. I had little luck with other PT's. With the help of Ryan I am back to powerlifting again. Ryan worked with my coach to devise a plan to make me pain free and by god did it work. Ryan's gym is clean, he's an intelligent man whose capable of making sure you understand the information and reasons behind his methods. I would go to him 10/10 times again. Im not all the way through seeing him, still have somethings to work though, but as it stands right now this guy is top tier.

I’ve been working with Ryan A. for over a year with assistance and coaching within the sport of Powerlifting. I would highly recommend his services as he has helped me to rehabilitate reoccurring injuries that have hindered progress. We have successfully teamed together to have my last two competitions result in peak performances that were most importantly injury free. Ryan is extremely clear, patient, responsive and provides education behind his methodology of programming and rehab / pain management.
Joshua Singh
I came to Ryan with a aggravated ac shoulder joint, two previously dislocated ribs and aggravated intercostal muscles, within the first 2 weeks my bench was near sub maximal load and within 1 month I was at 95% max with no stimulus. My squat also progressed with the exercises given and managed a pr 3 months after my first initial visit with little to no stimulus. Highly recommend as he is a great person and a great pt.
Martin
Ryan has been very helpful with my rehab and training. I was using a different program when I developed some lower back issues. That program didn’t have an injury protocol that was relevant to my needs. I was constantly restarting the program, modifying lifts, and outright missing sessions. Since working with Ryan, while I’m not 100% yet, I’m way closer to being so than I was prior.
David Babb
I injured my shoulder and Ryan was able to help me recover. What I like about the process is that you start with the fundamentals and end up strengthening to the point where the injury will be less likely to occur. Ryan works close with you and adjusts accordingly. He is also always available and I would recommend coming to see him for any injuries!
S Zee
Ryan is a super informed but casual guy, very comfortable with being honest with him and receiving the same in return. He’s helped me rehab a mild hip injury and return to heavy squats in 2 months or less with essentially no pain. We’ve also worked on increasing my limited ankle mobility that has hindered the hip as well. Ryan has also worked closely with my powerlifting coach to establish an augmented program for me to incorporate some rehab work into my everyday lifting routine. Progress has been pretty consistent and significant assuming you follow his instruction!
Alex Freshley
For roughly 3-4 months (I think), I could not squat or deadlift because of a pain I thought was in my glute/leg. When I came in for my first meeting with Ryan, he did a few test and quickly found out it was an injured disk in my lumbar spine. Within less than 2 months Ive been able to squat over 300 again and deadlift over 300 again for reps, pain free. He has also done some needling work that has helped me alot with part of my rehab. I will definitely be coming back to get work done!
Steven Sek
Ryan is incredible! I have been going to see him since October and he is the first person is years that has been able to help me run pain free. If you are dealing with an injury or pain Ascension Rehab and Fitness is the place for you.
Lisa Izzi
Even though my surgeon told me my shoulder had fully recovered after surgery, I found I was having pain and discomfort when attempting to resume my normal activities. Ryan worked with me to complete my shoulder rehab, and NOW I’m ready to get back at it. He’s also helped me resolve some long term knee pain. Ryan has a lot of knowledge and expertise, and I’ve enjoyed working with him.
Lily Iatridis
Ryan has done a phenomenal job working with our daughter! He spoke to her and made sure she understood everything he said. She is now pain free and back to playing soccer again!
Melynda Ciafre
I visisted Ryan a couple days ago regarding overall soreness and general mobility. He answered all my questions and was able to get me feeling better than before I came in. Would 100% recommend for any sports related problems you have!
David Stiles
I have had bilateral hamstring tendinopathy for over 10 years and have seen multiple physical therapists over the years. Dr. Ryan has been the ONLY PT that has helped heal me and find the true source of my injury. He will work with you one-on-one for an hour without overlapping other patients. His rehab plans are anything but cookie-cutter. He customizes each session depending on your progress (or setbacks) and truly cares about you as a person. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing physical therapy and am so thankful that we found each other!
Joelle Herman
Ryan puts in a lot of time making sure you get taken care of. He does a great job working with you and making sure you’re getting healthy and stronger at the same time.
Dylan Bedell
Went through an injury evaluation followed by PT, Ryan was super helpful, effective, and professional. Highly recommend.
Todd
Ryan was as professional and as knowledgeable as it gets. He understood where I was at as an athlete and where I wanted to get to, coming off knee surgery. Within the first session I knew I wanted to go back as I left with some of the best muscle exhaustion and increase in hip mobility that I have felt in over 10 months. His follow up email was extremely helpful with the list of exercises and explanations for each one, as well as what I’m feeling currently, why I’m feeling it, and how these exercises should help. Would highly recommend Ryan to anyone, especially athletes that are looking to recover from injury or prevent future injuries.
Declan O'Hara
I am thankful for Ryan helping me remove knee pain associated from car accident and weightlifting. He has a very high understanding of the human body and the appropriate corrective exercises.
Rodney Alexander
Ryan is great and definitely knows what he is doing to help with both injury prevention and strengthening at the same time.
Gray Mitchell
Ryan is simply amazing at what he does. He understands the body at an elite level but more importantly understands how athletes think! He has gotten me out of pain and healthy multiple times. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to get out of pain and back enjoy everyday life or sports at an elite level
Noah Abrams
Very supportive, and extremely knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone trying to take that next step in improving their performance and understanding their body mechanics.
Ali Nimeri
Ryan is great, and I would highly recommend working with him. Unlike experiences I’ve had with other PTs in the past, Ryan looks to address root causes rather than putting a band aid on the symptoms. We had success working through longer standing elbow tendinosis and a more recent ankle sprain. Much appreciated, and I’ll certainly work with Ryan again.
Cameron Baynard
This was by far the best PT experience I have ever had. I have managed knee issues since 2019, while playing masters level men’s lacrosse. I had been to other physical therapists with very little results, but Ryan really listened to what I had to say, and quickly devised an amazing plan to strengthen my knee and work other areas to improve the situation. His knowledge and application was another level of amazing. In less than 2 months, I am playing lacrosse tournaments with little to no knee pain. Thank you, Ryan!!!
Kris Harris
I compete in powerlifting and had some pretty severe neck pain that made me fearful to get back to training. I had seen a PT in the past, but they didn't do much of anything, and I felt pretty dismissed. Then, enter Ryan and Ascension Rehab! He had me under the barbell during our first session. He spent so much intentional time with me, sent the most thorough email after each evaluation, and checked in multiple times between our sessions together. I cannot recommend Ryan more if you are an athlete or lifter and experiencing any aches or pains. If you've tried PT before and didn't see any results, give it one more try - it's worth it!
Erin Elise
Ryan is great. He takes time to properly evaluate your issues and takes the appropriate steps to ensure the best course of action. I had back issues playing golf, and after a month working with Ryan the back pain is completely gone!
Nick Isenhour
Went to Ryan to deal with some ankle and low back pain. I’m a big runner and also do a lot of spartan races so, I knew I needed to see someone to get me back on my A game. Ryan did not disappoint. He took me through a series of movements to help identify the issues and pegged them down right away. I’m a few months out seeing him and feeling great after only a few sessions and have been able to get back to my running with no pain! I will for sure be going back to Ryan if anything else comes up!
Brittany Alexander
Dr Ryan is fantastic!! He takes time to figure out where the source of the problem/pain is coming from. Then he guides you through a program that will help strengthen the area so that you will get stronger and feel better! He will also reach out to you via text regularly to check in! I highly recommend visiting Dr Ryan!
Karyn Johnson HIIT-Fit
After my sports injury I thought all hope was lost. Dr. Ryan was able to get me back on track. He never pushed me to do any exercise I didn’t feel comfortable with. He was also patient with me as I got stronger every visit. I’m now back better than I was before the injury and he’s completely the one to thank for it. Hopefully I’ll never go through such a horrific accident; but, if I do there’s no doubt who I’ll be going back to see.
Rob Davis
I have worked and consulted with Ryan for years now. I consider him a trusted mentor and I wouldn’t have any second thoughts being treated by or referring a patient to him. He is a master at his craft and constantly pursuing more information to continue to help as many people as he can! Great PT, even better guy. Highly recommend.
Bennett Hixson
We love Dr. Ryan at Orangetheory in Fort Mill! He has come in for multiple workshops for our members and worked with many of them during their fitness journey to get them performing at their best overcoming injuries and chronic pain. Highly recommend him to all my members and can't wait to have him back in the studio!
Haley Jamison
I highly recommend Ryan! His patience, attentive listening, and thorough approach set him apart. I've experienced significant improvement in my condition, and his expertise has made the healing process enjoyable. If you're seeking a dedicated and effective physiotherapist, look no further.
Jamie Foster
Dr. Ryan was very knowledgeable about the areas that I had concerns with. He was able to pin point those areas, what was causing the pain, and then actively showed me ways I can prevent the discomfort from progressing, as well as ways to decrease the discomfort. He followed up with me about my progress as well! I highly recommend him whether you’re dealing with an injury or discomfort that you’ve been ignoring.
Ally Hillegass
Dr. Ryan is the absolute best physical therapist on the planet (I may be subject to a little hyperbole here, but I have my reasons)! I am a 67 year old powerlifter who came to the sport significantly later in life. When I started working with Dr Ryan, I had knee pain during my squat attempts (and a great deal of fear) and shoulder pain during my bench. Dr. Ryan quickly got to the root of the problem and setup an exercise plan to help. He also worked with my trainer Erin Elise of SNS Barbell for a seamless program. And in just 10 weeks it all worked. I can squat to depth with no knee pain and bench pain free. But, the real measure of success is that I just competed in a full power meet where I posted my best numbers ever on squat, bench and deadlift. I also won my division. Now that is progress. Dr. Ryan is funny, positive, kind and thoughtful. He has the determination to diagnose the problem and the subject matter expertise to create an effective plan. Thank you Dr. Ryan for everything.
Dr. Valaida Wise
As a college athlete at LSU, I have seen many PT's and athletic trainers, and I can confidently say that Dr. Ryan is the BEST! There is no 'cookie cutter' physical therapy here at Ascension Rehab. He uses science backed programs and exercises for his patients and truly cares about their progress. Everything is CUSTOMIZED exactly to your needs, ability, and goals. Don't wait! Sign up today, you won't regret it.

I cannot commend Ryan Abarno enough for his expertise and hospitality in our 1 hour session! He was recommended to me by a friend after I decided to begin training for a marathon in a few months. After a couple of intentional questions, we quickly diagnosed the origin of some pain I was feeling and spent the rest of the session walking through different rehab exercises, correcting some imperfections in my running form, and laying a foundation to build off of post appointment. He then sent me a follow up email with a summary of what we talked about, exercises to work on at home, and resources that clearly and concisely walk through the rehabilitation process. I hope I won't need to go back (haha!) but will certainly book him again if I run into any more complications!!
Deven R.
10/10 would recommend. I went to Ryan with what I thought was an elbow injury. He was able to quickly and accurately identify the root cause of this was something in my neck. By addressing the issue at its root he not only helped my elbow pain but shoulder and back pain as well. Ryan is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to explain why pain is occurring and the best ways to address and prevent future pain through both exercise and daily habits that could negatively impact injuries.
Patrick Milligan
Booked a session in hopes of improving my running form and efficiency… that hour was so VALUABLE and has forever changed the way I structure my strength training and running! If you’re looking to recover from Injury or focus on injury prevention… Ryan is your guy!!
Lizzie Lonon
My heel pain was so bad that I was limping around during daily activities and had to stop playing pickleball. I tried EVERY remedy I could find (ice, heat, rest, compression socks, night splints, acupuncture, cortisone shot, stretching, recovery shoes, new shoes, etc.) but none of it worked. Ryan listened to my symptoms, asked more questions, did some baseline testing, and pinpointed the root cause. He taught me targeted strength building and alignment exercises that progressed over the weeks, and I am so happy to say I am back to my pre injury activity levels. 100% recommend.
Jennifer Jameson
Would give an 11/10 if I could. Ryan is the best in the business and truly cares about his patients. He’s excellent at diagnosing symptoms and proving solutions that will actually work. Could not reccomend this practice more
Andrew Rowe
Ryan has been a game-changer in my recovery. I tore my meniscus (completely my fault after getting inspired by David Goggins' book—it’s amazing, by the way!) and was told by Ortho Carolina that surgery was my only option. But after two months of working with Ryan, I’m already close to running again. His expertise, personalized care, and encouragement have made all the difference. If you’re looking for a fantastic physical therapist, Ryan is the one to see.
Serge
I am an active runner and I have struggled with tendonitis in my left knee for a long time. I went to see Ryan and was very impressed with his specific diagnosis of my injury. He listened well and provided a thoughtful and accurate analysis of my problem. He spent the time showing me each of the specific exercises/movements that would help me rehab my knee. He used video analysis to show me the challenges my knee was having. At the end of the day it was Ryan's exercises, treatment and care that got me up and running again! Next stop for me is the Boston Marathon! Thanks Ryan!!
Kyle Kirchhoff
Ryan is hands down the best PT in the area! He has helped me stay strong, recover, and keep pushing forward in my ultra running journey. His expertise and personalized approach have made all the difference, and I’ve had the best PT experience with him. If you’re looking for a top-notch PT who truly understands athletes, Ryan is the guy!
Macy Weeks
Dr. Ryan is the best! Truly don't know where I'd be with my pain management if it weren't for his help. He's even helped me resolve back pain that I've been struggling with for almost 10 years
Savannah Moon
Ryan is helping me navigate some issues with my right knee. I compete in powerlifting and it is affecting my squat and depth. With monthly appointments and adding in additional mobility work, my knee continues to improve. He has continued to guide me on form and bracing. Looking forward to being back on the platform in June 2026.
Jennifer Bachner
If you’re an athlete, look no further. Dr Ryan was instrumental in helping rehab a hip injury earlier this year and got me back to form!
Richard Sponholz
I developed a glute tendon issue due to increased volume of running while training for an endurance event. It prevented me from training frequently and got to the point where I was in pain while sleeping. I thought there was no way I was going to be able to get back on track to hit my goals. Ryan and Erin were awesome at understanding the exact issue and enabling me to reroute my training to continue making progress instead of just taking time off and losing fitness. He used a large portion of my rehab in strength and movement along with some key rehab modalities for the perfect blend of getting me out of pain and keeping me on track. I highly recommend his work and appreciate his process as a coach who works with elite athletes every day and loves the collaborative approach.
John Lytton
I am a very active person and have suffered injuries, like most people have. Before I came to Ascension I was dealing with constant lower back issues and foot numbness when running. After working with Dr. Ryan over the course of several weeks I have enhanced mobility, almost no back issues and am beginning to regain control of my longstanding foot/ankle numbness. I appreciate how Dr. Ryan always takes the time to listen to old and new issues and address them patiently and thoroughly even if they are not necessarily related to the original treatment. I 100% recommend Ascension to anyone who has some physical issues and ready to put in the work to get better.
Zackery Cullinan
Coach Ryan and Ascension Rehab is the best place to go to build and rehab your strength and get back to the activities you love! He is so thorough and knowledgeable. He personalizes your plan for you and your specific need! Don’t hesitate to go ahead and schedule!
Emily Asbell
I went to Ascension Rehab to help with my mobility and strength post-surgery (2 knee replacements in 6months). I saw Erin. She is very thorough and professional. She was totally present and encouraged/pushed me to trust the process. I was able to make more progress than I thought I could. Thank you.
Constance Hewitt
My daughter is a D1 cross country and track/field runner at the University of Virginia. Ryan played a critical role in helping her return to peak fitness her senior year in high school, after suffering a fractured femur. Through a carefully progressed rehabilitation plan focused on strength, mechanics, and confidence, he rebuilt her strength safely and efficiently. This foundation made it possible for her to return to running that same year, and have a high level of success in DI competition her freshman year. She continues to see him even now in college when she returns for breaks for maintenance and oversight. Ryan is fantastic!
stephanie kermes
Working with Ryan has been a game changer for me. I have dealt with a fussy shoulder for almost 10 years. Most recently, for over 3 months it had be aggrevated. Affecting sleep and daily activities. After 2 sessions with Ryan, I was sleeping and almost pain free. Not only has Ryan taught me proper exercises, he was able to teach me the anatomy behind the cause. You will not be disappointed at Ascension Rehab!
Sarah Van Gundy
Ryan and his team are an integral part of my ongoing physical health, especially as someone who struggles with lower back issues. They are always available for questions or guiding me when I find myself in an uncomfortable situation. They've even found issues that I didn't even really know I had!! I would recommend Ascension to anyone who needs a PT who cares and who is vested in your success.
Tony Montanari, CIMA
I have tried so many Physical Therapists over the years, and Ryan is by far the best! He has helped my shoulder progress more in less than a year than all the other ones have in 5+ years.
Jack Newsom
I shattered my lower left leg in 2020. The injury was so bad I got compartment syndrome in all 4 quadrants of my lower leg. It took 6 surgeries to save & repair my leg. 5 years later, after I had plateaued from slowly getting strength back in my left leg, my daughter convinced me to try a single 1 hour session with Ryan. My daughter had been so impressed with the help she got from Ryan for her back issues, that she was certain Ryan could help me with my leg. Ryan took the time to evaluate what I was able to do and what I wanted to do in the future. He told me how he could set up workouts for me on his training app and we could continue to improve my leg strength even while I was traveling, which I do a lot of. I am still working with Ryan because my leg has gotten significantly stronger and more flexible since I began working with him 1 year ago. I am so impressed with the improvements I have made in this last year with Ryan's help, compared to the progress I had made in the previous 4 years.
